Everyone wants to talk about how AI hallucinations are a deal-breaker. How can you trust an AI that makes things up? How can you deploy something with an error rate above zero? This argument would carry weight if we actually held our other technologies to the same standard. But we don't. We never have. And if we did, most of the tools we rely on daily would be considered completely unfit for use.
Take Bluetooth. A technology billions of people use every single day. It's simultaneously one of the most widely deployed wireless technologies and one of the most aggressively unreliable. Bluetooth headphones randomly connect to the wrong device. They drop connections. They have known security vulnerabilities. You know what? We do nothing. We just accept it. Every single person with a modern car or wireless earbuds has experienced Bluetooth failure. We've collectively decided that the convenience outweighs the unreliability, and we've moved on with our lives. An error rate well above zero, and we've standardized on it.
Or consider cell phone calls. We've had cellular technology for three decades. Three decades. And we still drop calls. Your call still cuts out. The call quality is often poor. You still have to repeat yourself. Cellular networks fail in coverage areas. We've literally accepted the idea of yelling "Can you hear me now?" as a normal part of phone communication in 2024. The technology has had decades to mature, billions of dollars have been invested, and it still regularly fails. Yet we treat it as essential infrastructure.
Then there's IVR—automated phone attendants. "Please say your account number." The system never understands. You repeat it three times. It still doesn't work. You try entering it on the keypad. It times out. You're transferred to someone who says the same thing your phone said, except slightly slower. These systems fail constantly. The error rates are astronomical compared to modern AI models. And yet every major company has deployed them because the alternatives are worse. An error rate that would be considered unacceptable for AI is somehow fine for decades-old telephone technology.
Now combine all three. You're in your car, using Bluetooth earbuds that randomly switch to your phone, having a call with an automated attendant that can't understand anything you say. You're experiencing three layers of failure simultaneously, each with a non-zero error rate, each unreliable, and collectively you're just trying to get through your day. We normalize this. We've normalized it so thoroughly that nobody even talks about it anymore. It's just how technology works.
The argument against AI hallucinations falls apart under this scrutiny. The real difference isn't that AI is unreliable. It's that we have no established protocols for handling that unreliability yet. With Bluetooth, we've accepted the problem and built workarounds. With IVR systems, we've accepted that they'll fail and we've trained ourselves how to respond. The issue isn't that AI makes mistakes. The issue is that we don't have standardized processes for catching and handling those mistakes.
The correct deployment model for AI-generated content is the same one we've used for all professional writing: humans review before publication. When your marketing team writes web copy, someone edits it. When your legal department writes a contract, someone else reviews it. This isn't a special requirement imposed by AI. It's a standard practice that exists for every form of professional content creation. AI generates text faster, but the validation step remains the same. You don't publish unreviewed AI content any more than you'd publish unreviewed human content. The workflow hasn't changed. Only the speed has.
We need to stop asking AI to be perfect and start asking ourselves: how do we integrate this technology given that it has limitations? Because every technology we've ever adopted has limitations. We didn't wait for Bluetooth to be completely reliable before embedding it in every device. We didn't wait for cellular networks to have perfect coverage. We deployed them, understood their failure modes, and built workflows around those limitations. The same applies to AI. An error rate above zero is not a disqualifying characteristic. It's a characteristic we know how to manage because we've been managing similar issues in other technologies for decades. We're just going to have to get comfortable with that.
